Background

The goal of this project is to apply the CAD skills learned in class to model a selected mechanical part

Technical Details

22 CAD parts and drawings were generated to build the radial engine

Outcomes/lesson learned

  • Applied various SolidWorks features to design the components of a radial engine.

  • Generated detailed drawings, including lateral and side views, for each part.

  • Gained an understanding of how the integrated parts function together

Reflection - What would I do differently next time?

  • Cylinder body redesign: I would make the cylinder body round rather than squared, with exhaust vents distributed all around. This change would simplify manufacturing by reducing the risk of damage caused by sharp edges. Additionally, a round shape would improve the surface area of the cooling fins, enhancing the engine's cooling efficiency.

  • Tolerancing and precision: Tolerancing was not considered in the initial design. In the future, I will focus on redesigning certain components to improve the precision of joints and alignments. This would minimize wear and tear, ultimately improving the durability of the engine.
